OVERVIEW:

This seminar is part of a small CU led multi-disciplinary educational, policy studies and dialogue project contributing to implementation of the ASEAN Work Plan on Education (AWPE), 2016-2020. AWPE Sub-goal 5: is to “Complement the efforts of other sectors in meeting the objectives of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).” Project 47 of sub-goal 5 aims to: “Conduct multi-disciplinary research on social and sustainability sciences for understanding social, environmental and economic issues and impacts of ASEAN integration including analyses of significant policy implications for governments.” This seminar begins Phase 2 of the CU-OHEC project on the “ASEAN Way Forward for SDGs and COP21 through Social and Sustainability Sciences.” It will explore common goals, synergies, challenges, opportunities and lessons for achieving UN agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through FAO’s new Scaling-up Agroecology Initiative: Transforming Food and Agricultural systems in Support of the SDGS launched in 2018. It will do so while exploring complementary objectives and perspectives in Thailand’s unique Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) initiated by His Majesty, the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama 9). The seminar will discuss how SEP is already incorporated into Thailand’s foreign and domestic policy, could be better understood, promoted, applied, studied and if/where appropriate broadened with new work in 2019 while Thailand is ASEAN Chair. It will reflect on key FAO rationale, goals and objectives for scaling-up Agroecology with examples of Sufficiency Economy theory, policy and best practice. It will also explore how all stakeholders can work towards agri-food system and rural sustainability in Southeast Asia while applying lessons from FAO priorities and initiatives, SEP perspectives and UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations (MOST) programme to facilitate broader and system-level sustainability transitions across Southeast Asia and achieve SDGs, especially through reforms and transformations in university policies, research, teaching, curricula, partnerships and academic extension services for farmers and rural communities.
