Our goal is to inspire and empower organic farmers, traders, and consumers to embrace sustainable practices.

Mission

Mekong Organics is committed to:

  • Disseminating scientific knowledge on organic food production, certification, and consumption.
  • Providing interactive training on organic farming, certification, and trade for farmers, traders, and consumers.
  • Fostering connections between individuals, enterprises, communities, and countries to strengthen the organic agriculture movement.
Origins

Mekong Organics was initially founded in 2018 as a knowledge platform linking organic agriculture, nutrition, and health between the Mekong region and Australia. The initiative was led by Dr. Van Kien Nguyen, an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Agroecology at the Fenner School of Environment & Society, Australian National University, and former Director of the Research Center for Rural Development at An Giang University.

Dr. Kien’s journey in organic agriculture was significantly influenced by receiving the Rod May Award from the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA) for contributions to organic farming. This award enabled him to participate in the 2017 Congress of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) in New Delhi, India. Dr. Kien credits Rod May’s legacy and the IFOAM Congress as key inspirations behind his efforts to promote organic agriculture in Vietnam and other Mekong countries, while also strengthening ties with Australia’s organic agriculture sector.
