Lao Farmer Association (LFA)

Lao Farmers Association (LFA) is a nationwide network that brings together over 220 farmer organizations across 17 provinces and 52 districts in Laos, collectively representing more than 50,000 smallholder farmers. Originally established on January 20, 2014, as the Lao Farmers Network, it was formed by farmers, governed by farmers, and exists for the benefit of farmers. The network was officially registered as the Lao Farmers Association in 2024, marking an important milestone in its institutional development and long-term sustainability.

LFA is supported by the Department of Agricultural Extension and Cooperatives under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos. Its core mission is to strengthen the unity and collaboration among smallholder farmers to improve their farming systems in ways that are sustainable, productive, resilient, and environmentally friendly. LFA also aims to increase farmers’ incomes through commercial agriculture opportunities and actively engage in influencing agricultural policies at local, provincial, and national levels.

The association focuses on four key areas of work:

  1. Farmer organizational strengthening and networking – building the capacity of farmer groups and fostering connections among members to share experiences and best practices.

  2. Improving farming systems – promoting sustainable agricultural techniques, climate-resilient practices, and ecological approaches to farming.

  3. Agri-business development – supporting farmers to access markets, improve value chains, and develop their business skills to increase profitability.

  4. Policy engagement and advocacy – enabling farmers to have a collective voice in shaping agricultural policies that affect their livelihoods.
