Pha Khao Lao Platform

The Pha Khao Lao Agrobiodiversity Resource Platform is a collaborative initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich agricultural biodiversity of Laos. Initially developed under the Agrobiodiversity Initiative (TABI), a project financed and supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation from 2010-2020, the platform was established to conserve, enhance, and manage the biological diversity found in northern Laotian farming landscapes to improve the livelihoods of upland farm families.

Objectives:

  • Knowledge Consolidation: Gather and share comprehensive information on Lao agrobiodiversity for students, researchers, and practitioners.

  • Promotion of Sustainable Practices: Encourage the adoption of agrobiodiversity practices on farms, in landscapes, and along value chains.

  • Community Empowerment: Enable local communities to use their natural resources sustainably.

Vision:

Pha Khao Lao envisions a future where all stakeholders in Laos are empowered to embrace and utilize agrobiodiversity for a more sustainable and prosperous future. The platform aims to inspire future generations, celebrate Laos’ rich natural heritage, and foster a culture of conservation and responsible management of this valuable resource.

Mission:

The mission of Pha Khao Lao is to gather, consolidate, and share knowledge, information, and data on Lao agrobiodiversity for students, researchers, and practitioners. Additionally, the platform aims to promote agrobiodiversity practices on farms, in landscapes, and along value chains, and to empower local communities to use their natural resources sustainably.

Goals:

  • Comprehensive Resource Hub: Develop a central repository of formal knowledge on product and species information profiles, as well as expert and policy-related information.

  • Inspiration and Innovation: Inspire students, young agripreneurs, and farmers to develop agrobiodiversity-related farming and products.

  • Facilitation of Knowledge Sharing: Facilitate sharing and learning between different actors and promote changes in how people farm, eat, and use agrobiodiversity.
