Based in Luang Prabang in northern Laos, Saffron Coffee is a profit-for-purpose company. We profit for the purpose of supporting smallholder farmers to grow coffee in such a way to meet their individuals needs and their desire for a consistent, reliable cash crop. We promote only shade-grown farming practices to help regenerate, protect, and improve natural forest across a landscape characterised by slash-and-burn agriculture. Put simply, we are about “Quality coffee, grown right”.
Saffron Coffee has been working with families since 2006 and currently directly trades and sustainably sources ripe coffee cherries from the organic micro plots of over 800 hill tribe families from more than 30 villages across 4 provinces. After purchase at origin, the coffee is fully washed, sun-dried to parchment, hulled, graded, sorted, roasted, and packaged in Luang Prabang. At all stages of the supply chain, Saffron is committed to minimising environmental impact and maximising benefit for farmers and staff. Saffron distributes more than 8 tonnes of roasted coffee per year to hotels, restaurants, and guesthouses in northern Laos, and the remaining tonnes are barista-brewed to the highest quality at two locations – Saffron Coffee’s Espresso, Brew Bar, and Roastery on the Mekong and Saffron Coffee Alley – in Luang Prabang. The company plants over 30,000 new trees each year with partner farmers with the aim to bridge the supply deficit to meet increasing demand. Saffron also sells a vast range of coffee-related products – Coffee Jam, Coffee BBQ Sauce, Coffee Soap, Cascara (coffee cherry tea), and re-usable bamboo straws.
