Training Success: ALiSEA Empowers Field Staff with KOBO Toolbox and Photography Skills

Prepared by Soutima Boudvised – PAKA

ALiSEA successfully hosted a one-day hands-on training on “Storytelling from the Field: Basic KOBO Toolbox and Photography”, bringing together 20 participants (including 8 women) from 10 agroecology organizations.

The workshop aimed to strengthen digital data collection and field documentation using KOBO Toolbox and practical photography techniques. Participants—field practitioners, M&E officers, communicators, and youth facilitators—transitioned from Excel to KOBO-based structured forms and gained skills in capturing ethical, high-quality field images.

Facilitated by ALiSEA and co-trainer Mr. Chansamoud Vongphone from PAKA, the training included live demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and peer reviews. It achieved measurable success:
100% improved KOBO skills
📸 92% improved field photography

Mr. Inpone Xayyasan (VFI) shared: “Previously, I used KOBO mainly for data collection. Now, I can create my own forms—a valuable skill I will apply in my work.”

Participants also reflected on photography challenges. One noted, “I think taking a lot of photos means at least one might be usable—but often, I review them and see no photo is good enough.” This highlighted the value of learning how to plan, frame, and review images for effective communication.

Participants appreciated the chance to connect with peers and pledged to share their new knowledge within their teams. ALiSEA will provide continued support through digital resources, monthly check-ins, and platforms to share stories and photos—ensuring lasting impact on agroecological storytelling and advocacy.
